My youngest brother, F, is in town this evening. I fear there may be severe optimation. Now if only Michaels would condescend to stop in we could all drink and watch the snow.

Is ‘severe optimation’ a code work for heavy drinking? By the way, am indeed now writing on a research proposal for a PhD, due on the 6th of April… I’ll write into out that I’ll work strictly phenomenologically and the cooperation with a company is a must – I am planning to unleash Merleau-Ponty to tackle the Web 2.0…

Ooh, MP and Web 2.0 is exciting! Does writing the research proposal mean that you are enrolling in a PhD program? I hope you’ll share some of what you write!
Optimation is a code for drinking. We’ve stumbled, to the grand detriment of our livers, on The Optimator, which some good folks in Munich unleashed on the world some time back. Fortunately having been optimated previously, I know enough to handle with care…

Well, I am going to enroll if they accept me;-) They’ll only accept ten, and universities in German speaking countries have a problem with ageism. I completed my Master’s when I was 29, meaning that I was too old already for most PhD programmes (with programme meaning that there is tiny post attached to eat to keep you alive while working on your PhD). I explicitly asked whether there were any restrictions regarding age, and they replied that there weren’t any (nevertheless, I am going to include a bit about ageism in my letter of motivation, I think).
Hey, I know Spaten! The Optimator wouldn’t be for me, as Doppelbock (type of beer Optimator belongs to) makes me sick. Less because of the increased amount of alcohol, but it also seems to be richer in terms of nutritional value.

nice Freudian slip: “attached to eat” – meant “to it”, but its supposed to allow you to eat as well:-)

I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you. I don’t know if they would look with favor on a letter from myself: “please let Anaj work on this dissertation. I really want to read it!” That kind of thing only takes a person so far. Seriously, though, I wish you good luck!
I don’t think we have the same concerns with ageism in Ph.D programs here, though I could be wrong. I’m more familiar with the tiny post allowing one to eat (mostly pasta). Speaking of eating, I gave up meat (except fish) recently!
It’s a bit commical to think of the Optimator as having any redeeming nutritional value. It has made me sick for the usual alcohol related reasons. I’m sorry Dopplebock makes you ill. Have you had any of Spaten’s other beers?

I went to the Spaten brewery I think twice in my life time, together with my mum and we had Weißbier (the light beer) and Obatzter (lovely German consonant clusters), i.e. a seasoned soft brie cheese, squished with onions:-) Although I cannot remember the beer as a separate experience, i am quite certain I liked it. The different types of Weißbier from Munich are fairly similar, but mostly nice:-)
Don’t people often like to claim that the last beer they had must have gone off, to explain their not feeling well?
Am reading a PhD proposal from another friend in Vienna right now – different topic, different scholar ship, but good training:-)

It’s good to have examples from other people. how does the process work? Do you actually submit a proposal prior to being enrolled? That’s quite different from the way it usually works here.
I’ve not heard people complain about the last beer going off–but I’ll have to tuck that one away for future reference.
The Obatzter sounds delicious and reminds me that it’s lunch time. Salad with honey-mustard dressing, I think.
